On Tuesday, February 1, 2022 ATLIS hosted an informal event over Zoom called “Emerging Tech: A Meetup of Minds”. The meetup was the result of requests from the community to understand more about Web 3.0, Blockchain, and NFTs, and their impact on independent schools. ATLIS brought together renowned experts to explain these topics, how they impact education, and what students need to know to be prepared in a world where these things are making an impact. Panelists included Vriti Saraf, CEO and Founder of k20 Educators and Co-founder of k20 DAO; Michael Cohen, The Tech Rabbi, Co-founder of k20 DAO; Mike Peck, Co-founder of k20 DAO; and Erik Zvaigzne,VP of Product Innovation at Convergence.Tech. The meetup was free and open to anyone interested in participating.

The format was a presentation by the panelists followed by moderated questions and answers from attendees. Panelists defined Web3 and the Metaverse, and also described the Eduverse, a space dedicated to education professionals for learning and sharing resources. NFTs and blockchain, and decentralized identity were also discussed. After providing definitions, panelists and attendees went into a deeper discussion on how these emerging technologies are impacting education.

As with any emerging technology, there can always be positive and negative impacts and users must uphold a sense of responsibility and practice good digital citizenship as they navigate new waters. As technology leaders and educators, there is an even stronger sense of responsibility to teach children, who are growing up with constantly-evolving technologies, a strong sense of agency as they learn to navigate digital citizenship.

As the association for technology in independent schools, ATLIS aims to provide information and a venue for collaboration and information sharing. At the conclusion of this event, attendees requested that ATLIS continue to host similar conversations to help equip their schools for the future.
