ATLIS Partners with NBOA and Industry Experts to Update Cybersecurity Insurance Guidance

Technology leaders and business officers now have more tools to collaborate on cybersecurity insurance, as ATLIS partnered with NBOA to release an updated version of their cybersecurity insurance guidelines.

Cybersecurity is an ever-changing landscape, and having proper cyber liability insurance coverage is one of the most important essentials when it comes to mitigating risk in schools. Over the past few years, ATLIS has heeded increasing alarm from their community when it comes to navigating how to obtain, and keep cyber liability insurance.

In the spring of 2022, ATLIS worked with insurance experts to create the resource “Guidance on Cyber Insurance for Independent Schools”. In the months since this guide was released, the landscape of cybersecurity insurance has changed even further, requiring greater collaboration with the technology and business offices at schools. In response, ATLIS partnered with the National Business Officers Association (NBOA) to update this resource with a more collaborative approach.

The guide covers unique considerations for both the business office and technology department, as well as key controls, action steps, and examples of common threats. New in this member-exclusive iteration are answers to frequently asked questions asked by business officers, provided by representatives from Bolton Company. Finally, the guide includes a technology preparedness checklist, which considers risk mitigation efforts that most insurance providers want to see when reviewing applications.

"We understand that independent schools are struggling to understand cyber security insurance so we wanted to provide a comprehensive resource that covered the important aspects of getting appropriate coverage, keeping that coverage, and making sure schools are taking the right precautions to stay safe in a quickly moving environment,” said Christina Lewellen, executive director of ATLIS. “The previous edition of this resource didn’t include important risk mitigation considerations so we invited our colleagues at NBOA to bring business officers’ thought leadership to the table. The resulting resource is so much more powerful.”

“Special thanks to my friend and colleague, Christina Lewellen, the executive director of ATLIS, for inviting NBOA into the process. This opportunity allowed us to engage your peers and colleagues who serve on NBOA’s Business Officers Council, in addition to trusted business partners, to help ensure the refreshed guidance includes the business partner perspective,” said Jeff Shields, president and CEO of NBOA.

ATLIS and NBOA also thank the representatives from Bolton Company, Partlow Insurance Agency, and Ankura, for their contributions to this valuable resource.

ATLIS members can log into their member center to access this member-exclusive benefit in their cybersecurity resource collection. NBOA members can also access this resource by logging into their NBOA accounts.
