School Spotlight: The Fletcher School

The Fletcher School in Charlotte, NC named Apple Distinguished School from 2022-2025 for its innovative use of technology to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities and differences.

The Fletcher School announced recently that it has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School from 2022–2025 for its innovative use of technology to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities and differences. Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. They use Apple technology to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking in learning, teaching, and the School environment, and have documented results of academic accomplishment.

John Nussbaumer, Fletcher’s Assistant Head of School, noted, “Recognition as an Apple Distinguished School speaks to the quality of instruction and programming achieved in each classroom. Thank you teachers for helping each student identify technology usage that promotes individual learning and growth.”

The Fletcher School empowers kindergarten through grade twelve students with learning differences to achieve bright futures by offering an individualized, multi-sensory, college preparatory curriculum that prepares them to reach their full potential. The school uses technology to enhance instruction in the classroom while continuing to implement key aspects of their program. They recognize that students with learning differences acquire and process information based on their individual learning styles. Their devices and digital tools further enhance, supplement, and support instruction in ways that engage our learners and provide avenues for students to showcase their knowledge, skills, and talents.

The selection of The Fletcher School as an Apple Distinguished School highlights the school's success as an innovator and a compelling learning environment that engages students, and provides tangible evidence of academic achievement.

About The Fletcher School

Founded in 1982, The Fletcher School is an independent, kindergarten-twelfth grade, college preparatory school serving approximately 270 students across the Charlotte region. The bright, talented, and often gifted students learn in small, structured classes with a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Instruction is sequential, cumulative, and repetitious in order for students to achieve mastery and to mainstream into elementary, secondary, and post-secondary academic environments. The Rankin Institute, created in 2004 and operated through The Fletcher School, is a community resource providing education and resources to teachers, professionals, and parents beyond those directly involved with the academic programs at Fletcher.

The Fletcher School’s vision is to enhance instruction through the use of technology in the classroom while continuing to implement the key aspects of Fletcher's program: multi-sensory instruction, diagnostic and prescriptive teaching, and use of the Orton-Gillingham approach. The school offers students with learning differences the opportunity to acquire and process information based on their individual learning styles. Digital tools further enhance, supplement, and support instruction in ways that engage our students and allow them new avenues to demonstrate their skills.
