    Hello all,

Curious for some feedback on how other schools are taking attendance. Currently our faculty are active in this process and mark students for their classes. We are looking to experiment with a small pilot of classes where a student can check themselves in (we are a private boarding high-school) using their HID iClass/Prox cards. Beyond the Student A checking-in themselves and a friend pitfall. I am intrigued to know if other schools have tried this, and how it either succeeded or failed.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Some schools have gone to reader at the door and then badge in / out for attendance or location in case of emergency. A badge reader could be added to every classroom for this purpose.

It varies somewhat by division - we have 5 divisions.

All grades except 9-12 are attendance by day.

Upper School students are asked to sign in (or out) via SchoolPass - either with the iPad kiosk at the main reception desk, or using the app on their phone. Teachers in this division take attendance per period in Blackbaud.

With the above approach, SchoolPass provides knowledge of who is on campus, while the per-class attendance tracks their whereabouts throughout the day.

Compliance is not 100%, either from students or teachers, unfortunately. There was some question of providing students badges on our door access system, but I don't believe that would be effective, since if a group of students came in together, they would have to close the door, wait a few seconds, then the next student would badge in and enter. Also, this system doesn't allow integration with Blackbaud, and we cannot silo the data, so someone looking at student entries can see everyone on two campuses, which is a non-starter.
