Hope you will all join me in Orlando on Tuesday at 8:30 AM in Oceans Ballroom 5-8 for a discussion of what computing for young children could look like and how the future is clearly computational. As schools around the world embrace notions like "computer science for all," it's critical that we slow down and imagine what that might actually look like in practice, especially K-12.

My work is heavily influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach, rooted in progressive traditions, and based on forty years of teaching computer programming to children.

Progress will only be achieved by slowing down and realizing a commitment to democratizing high quality experiences.

This presentation offers a practical new hypothesis to guide innovative practice for teaching computer programming to young children that is situated in the progressive traditions of project-based learning, Reggio Emilia, and process writing. ATLIS is the perfect venue for sharing this provocation and receiving valuable feedback. Opportunities to participate in further collaborative action research to explore the topics introduced during this session will be shared. In particular, we will explore three paths in order to better understand what young children are capable of creating via computer programming: open-ended environments, creating ancillary materials or modified software environments to support independent learning, and a combination of these two approaches.

Perhaps most importantly of all, we need a slow computing revolution for children that captures their remarkable capacity for intensity in a world where not all screens are created equally.
