  • 1.  Removing iPad from Apple Classroom in Jamf enrollment

    Hello Hive minds,

I am hoping at least one of you might be able to give me some insight.  I have 8 mini iPads that were enrolled in Apple Classroom through Jamf.  However, we would like to unenroll or remove them from AC.  We have taken one out of the Static Group, moved it to another Static Group, Wiped it, and started the process of enrollment again.  However, when we get to the Remote Management portion of enrollment, the iPad give the error that "The configuration for your iPad could not be downloaded.  The configuration is not available."

Any advise?  I have not had the time to work through Jamf training due to the craziness of the start of the school year.  Any insight you might be able to provide would be brilliant.

    Thank you,
    #ITSystemsandSupport

    Hi,

You want to remove the iPad from being managed at all correct? If so you need to do two things. First, in Apple School Manager go to Devices and look up serial number. Click Release Device. Then in JAMF (I don't use JAMF so not sure where) you need to remove the serial number as a managed device as well. This will totally remove the device from being managed by your school as if you were giving it away to someone. If that isn't what you want then I may have misunderstood.

That is it... by removing it from Apple School Manager, JAMF no longer will see it for any pre-stage enrollments you have. In JMAF you can remove/delete the asset.

I use JAMF. The place in JAMF where you can stop it from requiring login and management is the PreStage enrollment scope However, after you release an iPad in Apple School Manager as Brian directed, you won't have to (and actually can't) do that in JAMF as Apple will no longer make the device available in the pre-stage and it will no longer show as an option to scope.

However, you have to unmanage (in JAMF) or wipe the device to completely break the connection to JAMF as it is established when you provision a "blank" device. A wipe is the cleanest option. Otherwise, for a device you just unmanage, you might end up with apps using device licensing not being able to be updated because they have no associated Apple ID.

Of course, a device setup without being enrolled in JAMF or some other MDM will only be able to install apps purchased (even free apps are considered purchased) by an Apple ID.
