  • 1.  1:1 Insurance

    Posted 10-28-2024 07:38 AM

I hope the group is having a great start to the week. As Whitefield Academy is looking to move forward to a 1:1 solution, device insurance has become more prevelant in our discussions. Does anyone have any insight on proper insurance methods for a 1:1 model? There are many underwriters to choose from, but curious if there is unified carrier that the group prefers over other carriers.

    Thank you

@Josh Blunier When we launched our 1:1 many years ago, we used Safeware insurance for our school-issued devices.  There was a $250.00 per incident deductible charge, and after that, the insurance covered the difference.

We found that the insurance cost and the deductible charge made it cheaper for the school to self-insure. We maintained the $250.00 per incident charge and have AppleCare on all of our devices for the term of our cycle (3 years).

I'd be happy to provide more details if you want to reach out.

Hi Josh--When I deployed 1-1 my team did a lot of research about different models.  Today there are many options. I have used Laptop Insurance | Worth Ave. Group in the past. Happy shopping for the just the right product!

    Josh,

We have used WorthAve Group for years for grant computers issued to financial aid students. It is a great service but does not cover warranty-related issues, only damage and loss.

AppleCare started offering a new education option a little over a year ago, which we have since adopted. AppleCare+ (no service fee) costs us $159 for three years. There is no charge for repair, including accidental damage (two per year). We have this coverage on our faculty/staff Macbook Airs. There is no need to repair the device in-house; you can just use the mail-in repair service. The end user can also take the device to any Apple service provider for repair.

We have been pretty happy with the response time for the repairs. The biggest downside is that loss and theft are not covered. To cover loss and growth, we added additional devices to our original order. We want to keep our fleet the same for all users.

+1 for AppleCare+ and for our Surfaces, the Microsoft equivalent.

    Hi Josh.

    A couple thoughts:

    • Have you considered self-insuring? Rather than paying an insurance provider, setting aside $ and extra laptops for potential breakage and/or replacement and loss? The first year is the hardest as you have no data to go on but you may end up with surplus funds, ya never know. It works for some schools especially if it has a healthy tech budget, deductible/incident fee, or charges a tech fee. It also depends on the device being replaced, especially if it is high-end. You can also incentivize with a fee refund to a parent/guardian if the laptop is returned in usable condition at the end of the year, if you wipe them every year.
    • Are you buying or leasing the laptops? With a lease breakage and replacement can be covered but not loss as they need to be returned at the end of the lease.

    I hope this is helpful.
