    Hi All,

I'm curious if anyone has looked into or has thoughts on Google Gemini Chat access with their workspace licenses. Google recently rolled Gemini Chat out to schools with the appropriate licenses for students 13 years and older. We currently don't have a student facing AI solution, but are planning to dive into that next year. In the meantime, with the Gemini Chat access that contains our data to our domain, I was wondering if anyone has thought about the potentially using Gemini with students under the age of 13 (Middle School). I've referenced the Terms of Service and can't find where it says you can't, but their site says you can't and when you click on the links associated, it mentions managing an account with parental consent. I'm thinking that if we had parental consent, under COPPA, this might be ok. We definitely don't want to go against the terms or service, but I'm not really finding clear language specifically about Gemini and with the Parental Consent clause in COPPA, it's hard to determine. Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Justin

Justin - I am unclear about what is and isn't available via Gemini for education, as everything I have been seeing references a paid service and additional costs to existing licenses. The fees listed here - https://edu.google.com/intl/ALL_us/workspace-for-education/add-ons/gemini-for-google-workspace/ - range between $18-$27 per month per user.

Can you provide a link to what you are seeing for Google Gemini Chat? I would love to understand what they provide for free versus at a per-user cost.

I met with CDWG (our Google Workspace reseller) about this, and to be honest, I'm still confused.  I was provided this doc (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1o9TiL_93-pVjeOiIJAEy7fw1l16q5Etqzt9-HZRMaSc/edit?usp=sharing), which may help, but in practice, I'm not able to turn the Gemini App on for "13+" user orgs still.  I plan to follow up again with them.  It appears that you can get the Gemini App for free as part of Google Workspace for Education Plus, but there are two additional levels of service that you pay for per user, similar in fee structure to what @William Stites referenced.  CDWG mentioned a 3-month trial for 10 licenses (with a fee), I'm interested in exploring that further to learn more.

Did y'all see that Google is rolling most of the Gemini features into standard Workspaces for Business accounts? I'm very curious if/how this will trickle over to the Edu side for users 13+ or 18+.

Brent, thanks for the link from CDW that is a great resource to reference and you are correct. William, I'm referencing the no-fee Gemini Chat that is now included in the Workspace Education Plus. There are two additional add-ons you can pay for, Gemini Education and Gemini Education Plus. If you look at this page, it explains under the "What are the different terms of service between the Gemini app..." at the bottom of the page, that the Chat is available free of charge and that it is covered under the Google Terms of Service. So I would expect, just like the other services and additional apps that aren't part of the service, with parent consent, it would be allowable. Additionally, if you look at the "Are there any restrictions" question, the first link takes you to the age requirements for private accounts which allude to parental consent and if you follow the Google Workspace for Education Link, it too refers to COPPA and COPPA allows for access to apps and services with parental consent. Would this be any different from allowing YouTube to our students as an additional app that isn't under the Workspace agreement.

    Hi all,

Upon reviewing the Google for Education / Gemini webpage, it isn't easy to understand the age requirements of the free version of Gemini. I see what you're saying, Justin, where in the FAQ section says, "This Gemini chat experience is covered under the Google Terms of Service and Google Workspace Additional Product Terms" and "When Education Plus and Education Standard users chat with the Gemini app, it is governed as a Core Service covered under the Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service."

That said, when they advertise the free version they call it the "Gemini App" and then in the FAQ section they say the Gemini App is 13+

Personally, I would err on the side of caution and stick to the 13+ limit, but it may be worth filling out the contact form to speak with someone with Google directly to get clarity.
