No Cellphone Policy and Yondr Pouches

We have a "No Cellphone Policy" during school for our middle school. We are planning to do the same with upper school next year. Do any other schools do the same and how is it going? Does anyone use something like the YONDR pouch and if so have you had success and is it worth the investment?

For reference, here is an article from the Wall Street Journal about locking up student phones during the school day.

I would love to hear what other schools are doing regarding a No Cellphone Policy. Thanks for any insight.

Unfortunately, I don't have any answers for you on this, but I am looking into it too. I don't want to go this route but I'm seeing all of the issues. I'm interested in reading a new book that was released this week that addresses some of this called, The Anxious Generation, by Jonathan Haidt. He's making the rounds discussing this book.

Our leadership team is discussing this issue too. My fear is that it's going to be the same as any other policy that's hard to enforce when everyone doesn't enforce it the same way (e.g. dress code).

Jonathan Haidt met with our Upper School last week. He was very good.

We also looked at Yonder pouches, but determined that they were too expensive for our use at this point in time.

Jonathan Haidt was just interviewed on NPR - week of March 26th - if anyone is interested in hearing more about his book The Anxious Generation.

@Vinnie Vrotny - I would be very curious to hear more about the conversations that came from having Jonathan on campus.

I'm curious about that as well. Haidt was also on Simon Sinek's podcast this week.

We have adopted a no cell phones policy for our middle schoolers and have clear hanging shoe racks in every Homebase. First thing in the morning, teachers remind the students to put them in these cubbies. They come back at the end of the day to grab them. For the most part, it is really successful. We are going to start implementing this with our upper-school students as well.

This is a really timely conversation, we are having these same discussions at our school and have been paying close attention to the thoughts of Jonathan Haidt and others on this subject. We've never allowed student cell phones and other personal network-connected devices (smart watches, etc) at our Lower School, and the Middle School has had a policy in place for a few years where there are hanging pouches in homerooms so that the students do not have access to personal devices during the school day.

Upper School has proven to be more difficult to come up with a workable solution since with our schedule the students there are not quite so attached to a homeroom where they check in to start the day and check out at the end of the day. The Yondr pouches have been mentioned although another idea being considered is to simply establish a core habit that personal cell phones are not to be used inside our school buildings. If Upper School students need to make a call for some reason or message a parent, they can go outside to do that. Of course, it's not terribly helpful when the weather is nice and everyone wants to be outside anyway. But without getting too heavy-handed we are trying to find the right balance where students understand that personal device use during the school day can have a negative impact on school culture and student learning, and they are really not needed because we issue a school-managed laptop to every student. As is often the case when crafting policies for students, we are seeking input from our students as well. I'm certainly interested to hear what other schools are doing in this area. Thanks!

Thank you everyone for your input. It sounds like we are all in similar situations and moving in the direction of some sort of policy for our school.

If the policy is something similar to "keep your phones put away in backpacks or lockers during the school day" then the teacher has to spend time and energy enforcing that policy. Have you seen success with this type of policy or would you say that going either with the Yondr pouch or something home made (like hanging pouches in a homeroom or home base) is more effective?

Again thank you for all your input, this is super helpful.

    Darren,

Our Middle School has a similar policy, we bought cases on Amazon that hold them by grade.  Here is the Amazon link - https://a.co/d/6UdENxd

That looks like it wold be effective. I have seen the pouches that you hang from a wall or door but I haven't seen this, thanks.
