For schools with an SRO, does your SRO have access to your SIS? If so, at what level? Did you create a special communication to inform families?

    Kelly,

We are incredibly fortunate to have a fabulous relationship with our director of security and his team.  They are part of the community, provide PD to our faculty, interact with our students regularly, and give presentations during chapel time.  Also, because the director is part of the admin team, he and his team are an integral part of the community and overall campus plan for physical security.  In recent years, the security office and my office moved in together and actually share a suite where we discuss the crisis plan and overall data management as it relates to security.  This relationship provides a great deal of comfort for me in providing security with access to our SIS so they can see student photos, schedules, and the directory.  Keep in mind we are a large JK-12 all boys(1000) school with a coordinate program with St. Catherine's.  We also have to be sure we have regular communication with our sister school, so in the event of a crisis, comms and accountability work seamlessly.  We use RUVNA with a joint tenant between St. Christopher's and St. Catherine's and we can account for over 2000 constituents in under 11 minutes.  Post drill, we debrief by looking at the data and collecting feedback from our faculty staff.

    Hope this helps.

    Hiram

    Hi Kelly,

This is a great question. Independent schools are largely exempt from federal education laws unless they receive any federal funds. FERPA is the one federal law that could play a role in making a decision about adding SROs to the SIS. The Future of Privacy Forum is a great resource for these types of questions. They have a guide called "Law Enforcement Access to Student Records: A Guide for School Administrators and Ed Tech Service Providers" that addresses under what conditions an SRO can have access to student records within the limits of FERPA. As a former Director for an Independent school, we were not bound by FERPA, but voluntarily chose to comply with it as it showed our commitment to maintaining student records in a fair and recognized manner.

On a side note - I was excited to see your email. I actually attended Vail Mountain School in elementary school. Such a small world.
