  • 1.  We Need a New DNS Hosting Provider. Suggestions?

TPx (our ISP) is dropping DNS hosting and will no longer be the authoritative DNS for our domain in mid-August. Nothing like a little notice.

Do you have any suggestions? I was looking at both Cloudflare, since they are very highly recommended, and Google Cloud DNS, since we are already a Google Workspaces for Education company.

    Thanks.

A number of cyber insurance policies are now asking for / requiring secure DNS. Take a look at QUAD 9 - https://www.quad9.net. It is free and secure.

    Hi Bill,

Just want to make sure you are talking about DNS and not domain registration servers which are different animals.  For example, we have Comcast as our ISP but our domain is registered at AWS Route53 and that's where all our host records live. DNS is provided internally with our AD DNS which uses root servers for updates. When we started with Comcast way back they were also our domain hosting provider and we had to switch.

Hope that helps and isn't pedantic. There is a lot of confusion out there in how this is all set up.

    Take care,
    Ally

    Allyn,

Thanks for the response! Right, I do mean DNS. Educause is the registrar for our domain (pinewood.edu) and points to our authoritative DNS, but TPx (our ISP) was hosting our primary DNS records (as is normal for ISP's). They hosted the authoritative DNS for our domain.

I ended up going to Cloudflare yesterday. TPx recommended GoDaddy, and I did look at their offering. It was cheaper than Cloudflare, but I have had issues with GoDaddy in the past and decided not to go with them.

Google Cloud DNS's pricing structure was not straightforward enough for me, and the setup seemed a bit over complicated for our needs.

+1 to Ally's response. We use AWS Route 53. I'd be happy to talk you through how to get up and running.
