Have you visited another independent school? What prompted the visit? What impressed you?

If you have photos that you can share, I'd love to see them!

@Ashley Cross are you looking for anything specific or just general photos from schools?

On my site visits, they have generally looked at specific things we are considering implementing in our school that the other school already has in place. In addition, some visits are when we have regional meet-ups with our local state organization(s) or within small working groups.

Lastly, I visited some schools while doing consulting work, providing a very interesting perspective.

I've had the opportunity to do this a few times and found it to be highly beneficial.  While there may have been areas of specific interest for the tour, it was about understanding the environment and conversations with colleagues about issues and ideas.  I always returned with new ideas.  Everyone always seems willing to host.  Our approach was to find cities or areas with a concentration of schools that could be visited over a couple of days.  It is some of the best PD we have done.

Sorry.  No pics but tons of notes.

    Hello Ashely,

I find school site visits to be very helpful and enlightening.  Regardless of how well your school might be doing, I can pretty much promise that there are other schools out there that are doing things both better and worse at some things than you are.  It is wonderful to see where you are excelling and maybe able to make a suggestion or two to the school your are visiting, and also be able to see where they are doing something different or better and be able to use that information to improved your school.  It is a win-win all around.  I have been on many site visits as well as hosted many at my school and profit from ever single one.

Let me know if you would like to stop by and visit Webb School of Knoxville ;-)

One example that comes to mind for me is a trip to North Broward Prep a few years back. We went to look at their tech, but we found they had a really interesting approach to utilizing thinking maps throughout the school. There were other things the visiting team took away from that visit including scheduling ideas, potential furniture, and even positive messaging for students embedded in unique places around the school. In the bottom photo, you can see where they posted how they were meeting their mission and strategic goals in a very visible way. It was fascinating.
